Tributes paid following the shock death of 'legend' South Shields master barber Allan Stone

Glowing tributes have been paid to a much-loved and respected South Tyneside Master Barber and dad who has died suddenly.

Allan Stone’s death at the age of 46 has united the barbering world in grief, with industry experts hailing his skills, and enthusiasm for his profession.

And friends have also united to mourn but praise talented Allan, whose Stoney’s Barber Shop is a long-term fixture in Laygate Lane, South Shields.

British Master Barbers (BMB), an alliance of UK barbers, said in a statement: “Unfortunately, we’ve just heard that we have lost a wonderful industry figure.

“Allan Stone has been a huge supporter of the barbering industry. Pushing for higher standards and offering professional education to the newcomers.

“He would be a regular at most barbering shows, offering advice and having fun. Allan and his professionalism will be sorely missed.”

And fellow Master Barber, Belfast-based Sam Arthur said: “Another great legend in the barbering world has passed away.

“Mr Allan Stone, affectionately known as Stoney to his mates. A great friend to many and a family man also.

“I had the pleasure to work alongside Allan a few times on stage. A true professional and a fantastic barber.”

A spokeswoman for South Tyneside College, where married father-of-two Allan lectured part-time, said: “We are deeply saddened and shocked to hear of the news of the sudden passing of our colleague, Master Barber and entrepreneur Allan Stone.

“Allan had a huge talent and passion for his work, and we were so lucky to have him on our team.

“He was a larger than life character who brought his unique flair, expertise and humour to his work with our students. He was a national talent and a local hero.

“Our hearts go out to his family and we are thinking of them, his friends and all who knew him at this absolutely tragic time.”

Bosses at South Shields’ Hedworth Hall venue said: “A true legend in the barbering world who inspired generations into the profession.

“A true gent with a heart of gold who did a lot for the community of South Tyneside. RIP Stoney - South Tyneside will be a much sadder place without you.”

Allan, died late on Thursday, was a Grandmaster Barber, as named by the BMB, and a Master Barber, as recognised by the British Barbers’ Association.

He began his career at Saks hairdressers in Newcastle as a Saturday worker while still at school.

In 2019 he expanded his business by opening a second outlet in South Shields.
