Members of Primrose Park Alliance are calling out to residents to join them on Sunday, April 3, as they head out to Valley View Park and Springwell Park, both in Jarrow, to pick up litter.

The group is taking part in the Great British Spring Clean which sees volunteers head out into community spaces to clear away rubbish to make areas more inviting for the public to enjoy.

One of the founders of the Primrose Parks Alliance Caroline Hall said: “The litter pick is part of the British Spring Clean event which is taking place between March 25 and April 5.

“They have set a challenge, for people to collect as much litter as possible. We will be counting the bags we collect and sending it to Keep Britain Tidy who will keep a record.

“We always have a really good turnout on our litter picks, especially when the weather is nice.

“It’s great for families and local residents to get involved in - it’s just a little bit different for families to do.”

The event comes as the group was awarded cash from the Police and Crime Commissioner as part of Operation Payback – a scheme that sees money seized from criminals ploughed back into community projects and initiatives to improve people’s lives.

The £2,500 award will be used to transform the old staircase within Valley View Park with a rockery, and to spruce up the area around it.

Caroline added: “We have lots of things in the pipeline for the parks. People can keep up to date with the events we have planned, as well as what is going on in the parks, by joining our Facebook page.”

Anyone who would like to join the group as they make their way around the park can do so by meeting at the Pavilion within Valley View Park at 1pm.
