Warning over crowds at seafront as Council asks people not to travel outside area to South Shields beaches and parks

South Tyneside Council has raised concerns over large numbers of people making a trip to South Shields seafront for their daily exercise as they remind residents to stay local to their area.

Car parks along Sandhaven and Little Haven beaches in the town have been packed with cars in recent weeks as families drive to the coast.

But although car parks remain open, under Government lockdown rules, people should remain close to home when they exercise.

Some takeaway outlets also remain open for hot drinks and food, but the council is also reminding people to ensure they keep their distance when queuing.

Now in a bid to ensure the rules are followed, South Tyneside Council has confirmed that new Covid signage will be installed along South Shields seafront this week.

A message on the council’s Facebook page said: “The seafront and our parks are very busy

“If you are out and about for daily exercise please remember to socially distance, especially when queuing for a coffee, food or public toilets.

“Exercise locally, please don't travel from outside your area and keep within your bubbles.

“We are working with 57 other coastal councils to keep our residents safe.

"Our staff will be working with businesses to ensure standards are met and safety in place.

“New Covid signage will be installed this week along the seafront.

“Please follow guidance if you are out and about.”
