Watch as South Shields sister braves the shave to raise vital funds for The People's Angels

Alison Davis has raised over £1,000 after shaving her head to help The People’s Angels continue their work in the borough.

The 50-year-old said goodbye to her locks at a socially-distanced fundraising event at The New Sundial on Friday, July 31.

Eight singers from Ian and Daniel Curry’s Into the Spotlight talent showcase performed from the balcony.

And South Tyneside Mayor Councillor Norman Dick and Councillors Gladys Hobson and Anne Heatherington were among those who showed up to support her.

The community interest company which was founded by her sister, Lynn Davis, has previously been nominated for awards by South Tyneside Council for it’s work helping thousands of people at crisis point in the borough.

This could be victims fleeing domestic violence and people experiencing homelessness to elderly residents unable to afford mobility scooters.

But the organisation, which is completely self-funded, has faced months of crisis itself during the coronavirus pandemic.

It was forced to close its base – in Lynn’s Garage on Ashleigh Road – and has been unable to sell items to raise funds.

“This will be a much-needed boost for us,” said Lynn, 54, who describes Alison as a sister and a ‘best friend'.

"She was so excited, she loved every minute of it, but it was very emotional, I was crying my eyes out.”

The two have a special bond, as Lynn has been a full-time carer for her sister for more than three decades.

Alison has neurofibromatosis, a genetic disorder that causes benign tumours to develop in the nervous system.

As a result she has learning difficulties and suffers from memory problems among other health issues.

Lynn also cares for Alison’s three children who suffer from the same condition.

Alison has raised £1,030 so far, with Angela Stepheson community champion at Morrisons in South Shields pledging to price match the amount.

“Alison is a big part of the People’s Angels and I’m so proud of her for doing this for us,” added Lynn.

“To say I’m overwhelmed is an understatement.

"I just want to thank everyone from the bottom of my heart for all of their support.”
