Jack, 82, has lived at Melbury House care home in Seaham since August 2018, having been diagnosed with Alzheimer's four years ago.

His wife Elsie, 80, lives at their home in Murton and is battling ovarian cancer. She would usually visit Jack regularly, but was taken into hospital after a recent fall.

But determined to reunite them before the New Year, their family rallied around to organise Jack to pay Elsie a surprise visit in hospital.

Their daughter Tracey Doyle and granddaughter Terri Doyle were their to capture the touching moment the pair saw each other for the first time.

In the emotional video taken by Tracey, Jack can be seen to be pushed into the room in a wheelchair while Elsie jumps up from the bed to hug her husband, whilst shouting ‘Jack, Jack!’

Although Jack’s condition means he is no longer able to fully communicate – it’s clear to see he recognises his wife from his smile the moment he hears her voice.

Granddaughter Terri, who works in A&E at Sunderland Royal, said: “Before nana became ill she used to see him every day.

“We didn’t want it to be next year before they saw each other, so we organised with the care home for my grandda to come into the hospital in a wheelchair taxi.
