A woman has suffered ‘life-changing’ injuries after being hit by a train near to Chichester Metro Station.

Emergency services were called to the metro station in South Shields at around 9.40pm on Sunday, January 19, and a woman was taken to hospital.

Police have confirmed that she remains in a critical but stable condition.

A Northumbria Police spokeswoman said: “Shortly before 9.40pm on Sunday, police received a report of a woman being hit by a train near Chichester Metro Station.

“Emergency services attended and woman was taken to hospital with life-changing injuries.

“She currently remains in hospital in a critical but stable condition.”

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service also confirmed they were in attendance.

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called at 9.32pm to reports of a person struck by a train between Tyne Dock and Chichester Metro Stations.

“We sent an ambulance, two of our Hazardous Area Response teams and requested support from the Great North Air Ambulance doctor, who also attended.

“One patient was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle with life-changing injuries.”
