Police presence in South Shields street after vehicle 'failed to stop'

Northumbria Police are searching for the driver of a vehicle which “failed to stop” in South Shields.

Three police vehicles and officers from the force were seen in Beaconside, South Shields, at around 10am on Thursday, September 10 following the incident.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson told the Gazette: “Shortly after 9.15am today (Thursday) we received a report of a vehicle that failed to stop when instructed by officers on Lizard Lane, South Shields.

“Officers have since located the vehicle in question abandoned in the Beaconside area of the town. Inquiries are ongoing to trace the driver in question.”

A resident, who did not wish to be named, said that inquiries in the street appeared to focus on a vehicle parked there, which was later towed away from the scene.

Officers could be seen sweeping up broken glass in the area, with a police van and two force cars parked nearby.
