Plans were lodged with South Tyneside Council to redevelop a brownfield site and building at Ellison Street.
The land, off the A185, was formerly used by a petrol filling station and is now occupied by business ‘Tanfastic.’

This would allow a tanning salon on the new upper floor and a reception area on the ground floor.
In addition, the wider site will be used as a hand car wash with an ancillary welfare and waiting area.
Car parking facilities will also be created on the site to serve both both uses.

This included “economic development in a sustainable location, which involves the creation of a new business and the improvement of an existing one.”
Following consultation, South Tyneside Council gave the go-ahead to the scheme on Wednesday, October 7.
Planners concluded that the site was in a “non-sensitive location” and would not disturb residents.

The redeveloped site in Ellison Street, including the hand car wash, is also expected to provide employment for six full-time members of staff.
The decision report goes on to say: “Based on established commercial use of the site and substantial distance to the nearest residential dwellings, it is not considered that the proposed hand car wash use (or enlarged tanning salon) would result in material harm to the amenity of surrounding residents through an unacceptable increase in noise or disturbance.
“This is also taking into account its position next to the A185.
