Earlier this year, proposals were lodged for the former Hill Park Community Centre on Ashbourne Road.

The building currently has a shop on the ground floor with the first floor boarded-up and vacant.

New proposals include changing the first floor into two flats alongside a new pitched roof.

Although similar planning permission was granted in 2014, the development never came forward.

South Tyneside Council planners gave the final go-ahead to a revised scheme on July 29.

They concluded there would be no issues around privacy, parking or impacts on species such as bats.

When complete, officers added the new flats would help meet housing demand in the borough.

A planning report reads: “The development would provide two two-bedroom upper-floor flats, converting the existing vacant upper floor of the building.”

Work must also start within three years under planning conditions.
