Meet the candidates for Whitburn and Marsden standing in the South Tyneside elections on May 6
Each one has been given the opportunity to tell readers why they’re running for a seat on the borough council and why people should vote for them.
Here’s what candidates standing in the Whitburn and Marsden ward have to say.
Denis Burns (Independent)
Approached for statement and picture.

1. Stan Wildhirt (Conservative Party)
Desirable areas like Whitburn are becoming targets for council development because they can achieve higher prices for housing and quick turnover. The council is easily persuaded to allocate green belt land because high value houses command a lucrative council tax return to offset some of the ridiculously high borrowing and interest charges incurred in the past. Regardless of the affirmations of certain Labour councillors that they object to the building on green belt, can the residents of Whitburn and Marsden rely on them to offer a strong objection against their own ruling council to which they are affiliated? This is why we need an alternative voice which can question decisions which seem to be voted through automatically without question. No new ideas from Labour except increasing council tax. I want to make our coastline a more vibrant, clean and safe place for business and residents alike, whilst preserving our heritage. Photo: Stan Wildhirt (Conservative Party)

2. Trevor Sewell (Green Party)
I’ve lived in Whitburn all my life and genuinely have a passion for the place and its people. I believe leaving all to the developers and a Labour-dominated council is a recipe for ruin and decline. In 2019 Greens got a voice in the council chamber that’s made all the difference. Vote for me and I’ll work tirelessly, being the voice of all the people of Whitburn and Marsden, not a rubber stamp for developers. A good environment makes the Whitburn and Marsden area what it is – a great place to live. Vote Whitburn Green May 6. Photo: Trevor Sewell (Green Party)

3. Tracey Dixon (Labour Party)
I have been an elected member since 2002 and I am again proud and privileged to be the Labour candidate for the 2021 local elections. I have held a number of cabinet portfolios including adults, health and culture. I was the Mayor of South Tyneside in 2007-2008 and my current role is not only being the councillor for the ward where I live but I am the leader of South Tyneside Council. I have worked and continue to work tirelessly for the residents of the Whitburn and Marsden ward not only listening to what they would like to see being delivered but I also try to help deliver them. I am hoping to have the support of my residents again to ensure they have a voice in the town hall. Please vote Labour vote Dixon on May 6 2021. Photo: Tim Richardson
