Little ones at Nurserytime South Shields, based in Beach Road, were curious about South Shields Town Hall, which sits just along the road from where they go to play and learn every day.

Nurserytime manager Helen Coulson said the children were keen to learn more about the impressive Edwardian building, and were thrilled when they got an invite to visit.

She said: “The children of Nurserytime were very inquisitive about the town hall and what it is like inside, and the chiming of the clock we regularly hear from our nursery.

"We therefore arranged for the children to meet with the Mayor Cllr Pat Hay and have a guided tour around the Town Hall itself.

"The children met with the Mayor and her assistant Janice to begin their tour of the Town Hall.

"The Mayor gifted each of the children a colouring/activity book around the history of the building and spoke to the children about the history of the Town Hall.

"She asked the children if they had any questions which allowed for them to ask all the questions they had about the building whilst having juice and biscuits.”

Helen said the children visited many of the special features in the town hall, including a post box and the mayor’s chamber.

She said: “We would like to say a big 'thank you' to Mayor Cllr Pat Hay and Janice Porter for taking time out of their busy schedule to welcome our children to the town hall and taking the time to deliver such a wonderful, educational visit to the children.

"We have already witnessed the children passing the information on to their peers and family members, telling them all about the history of the Town Hall.
