Plans to convert space above a South Shields shop into a three-bedroom apartment have been submitted to council development bosses.

South Tyneside Council’s planning department has received an application for the North East Bed Centre premises at 113-115 Fowler Street.

The application is seeking permission to change the use of the first floor from retail to a mixed use of retail and residential, with “rear ground floor and external alterations”.

An application form submitted to the council states the alterations aim to provide a first floor, three-bedroom flat with a rear ground floor access.

The planning application adds that no building work or change of use has started to date.

Meanwhile, submitted floor plans show the proposed flat taking up a small part of the first floor space, with the majority of first floor space remaining as “shop storage” for the retail use.

Floor plans show three bedrooms in the proposed flat, each with a toilet and shower room, as well as a communal kitchen and lounge room.

It was also noted that there would be no change to the front elevation of the property facing Fowler Street under the plans.

A decision on the planning application will be made once a period of council consultation has concluded.

Comments can be made on the plans, via South Tyneside Council’s planning portal website, until May 15, 2025.
