South Shields town hall to turn green as part of tributes during Carers' Week

The week-long campaign, from June 7 to 13, will see people coming together to make caring visible and valued. It seeks to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges unpaid carers face and recognise the important contribution they make to their families and communities.

In recognition of their contribution, South Shields Town Hall will be lit up in green, Thank You signs will be posted on screens throughout the borough and a video from the council leader and deputy leader has been recorded thanking carers.

Council leader Councillor Tracey Dixon, said: “The past year has been one of the most challenging most people have ever known but for those with caring responsibilities, it has been so much harder.

“Vital services have had to close their doors during lockdown, leaving carers and those they care for without the support they relied upon. I would like to place on record my sincere thanks to all those unsung heroes who do such an amazing job caring for others.”

A number of events are being held for carers throughout the week. A virtual get-together on Zoom is being held on Thursday 10 June at 10:30am, hosted by South Tyneside Adult Carers Service (STACS). Anyone interested in joining is asked to email [email protected] or telephone 4061531.

A Covid-safe picnic in the park is being held on Friday 11 June from 11am until 1.30pm at South Marine Park. Hosted by STACS, light refreshments will be served. Anyone wishing to join is asked to contact STACS.

Councillor Anne Hetherington, Lead Member for Independence and Wellbeing, said: “One of the Council’s priorities is to support families and those who care for the most vulnerable in our communities so I am pleased that some events are being held this year to offer support to those who make such an enormous contribution. As restrictions start to ease, I would urge carers to reach out and connect with one another and access the support and advice available to them.”
