The spokesperson said: “Traffic lights in South Tyneside are maintained by the Regional Traffic Signal Service based in Newcastle.

“A member of the council’s highways construction team reported the damage to the signal pole on Thursday afternoon and Regional Traffic Signals attended the site to make it safe and carry out the necessary repairs.

“It is not yet known how the lights came to be damaged in this way, however we are supporting Regional Traffic Signals with their enquiries.”
