Residents have a ‘last chance’ to comment on South Tyneside’s Budget priorities

Residents have just under a week left to share their views on South Tyneside’s Budget priorities.

South Tyneside residents have until Sunday, December 7, to give their views on which discretionary services matter the most as South Tyneside Council looks to set a fair and sustainable budget for 2026/27.

So far, more than 1,500 responses have been received as part of the public consultation, which was launched on October 20.

Each year, South Tyneside Council must prioritise spending on statutory services such as adult and children’s social care, waste collection and safeguarding - which account for around 80% of its revenue budget.

The rising costs of delivering these services means that less money is available for discretionary services like leisure centres, youth services, welfare support and health initiatives.

Speaking ahead of the end of the consultation, Councillor Jim Foreman, Lead Member for Governance, Finance and Corporate Services, said: “We’ve had a fantastic response so far, and it is clear people care deeply about the services that make a real difference in their lives.

“Every pound of council tax matters, and your feedback helps us make informed, fair decisions.

“If you haven’t yet taken part, please do so before the consultation closes – this is your chance to influence how we prioritise spending for the future.”

The results and feedback of the consultation will be used to help South Tyneside Council shape future decisions about how discretionary spend is prioritised.

Residents can take part in the consultation on at: https://www.southtyneside.gov.uk/budget or by a paper copy at The Word, Hebburn Central, Jarrow Focus, Cleadon Park Library and South Shields Town Hall.

Anyone who takes part can enter a prize draw to win a £100 Love to Shop gift card.
