Whiteleas and Harton CC begin their DCL First Division campaign with the long journey to newly promoted Crook.

Leas will be led by Andrew Potts this season, following Owen Peterson’s decision to step down after 11 seasons at the helm.

It’s a remarkable story for Potts, who, only last June, underwent major brain surgery to successfully remove a tumour.

The wicket-keeper/batsman is certainly looking forward to the challenge ahead and will be using his own personal experience to motivate his players for the season ahead.

Potts said: “I managed to start the season last year, but with the news I received in May, I obviously couldn’t play any more games.

“When you have a life experience as I did, it makes you think in different ways and my outlook is more positive for it.

“I certainly didn’t think I’d be playing cricket 10 months after my procedure, that’s for sure.

“I want the players to be positive and enjoy the game as much as they can.”

Leas also have a new overseas professional this term in Pakistani fast bowler Biliwal Iqbal.

Iqbal represents Lahore in his homeland and has impressive first class stats with ball and bat and it is expected he will make his debut in tomorrow’s clash.

Potts will be without batsman Scott Oliver as he completes football commitments with Hebburn Town.

There are, however, places for young off-spinner Sid Corner Jnr and new signing Grant Parkin.

Sid Corner Snr once again leads the Second XI as they begin their season at home to Crook in a KP Simpson Accountants sponsored game.

Following a successful winter junior recruitment, Corner Snr is looking forward to progressing the youth players through his side.
