Powercut hits more than 1,000 homes and businesses in South Shields and Sunderland

A powercut hit more than 1,000 premises across South Shields and Sunderland today, Monday, March 1, with efforts ongoing to reconnect the remaining properties without their supply.

Disruption happened at around 12.15pm, with some addresses experiencing a flicker before power was quickly restored to their properties.

The issues have been reported across the NE34 and SR6 postcode areas.

An initial 1,562 premises lost their supply before it was diverted through another route to restore their connection.

Northern Powergrid which is in charge of the distribution network, has said 240 premises across the postcodes remained affected until 1.08pm, with 49 properties in Boldon Lane, Cleadon, still without power.

It is not yet known how long it will be before the final premises are reconnected to the system, although its website has suggested it could be around 3.30pm.

It said the problems were caused by underground high-voltage cables, with engineers working to resolve the powercut and establish what repairs are needed to the damaged equipment.

Northern Powergrid has not been able to say what caused the problems.

The firm told customers: "We're aware of an unplanned power cut in NE34 and SR6

“We are currently working hard to restore your power however we are unable to provide an accurate restoration time.

"Please call us on 105 if you have any specific questions.

"The power cut affecting your property has been caused by an unexpected problem with the cables or equipment that serve your area.”
