Project sees tablet devices given to elderly patients to support kidney healthcare

Tablets have been given personal tablets to support their kidney health.

NHS patients have been handed tablets to give them information they need to look after their health.

The devices have been gifted to people with kidney conditions through South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust.

The project is led by Health Innovation North East and North Cumbria (HI NENC).

The handout marks the second part of the rollout after the project first got underway in 2024.

It is aimed at helping those who would otherwise struggle to get online, with around 20 devices now being used.

Patients can use the tech to access healthcare support such as the NHS app and specialised information on kidney care.

Dr Sid Ahmed, a Renal care Consultant, said: “We know when patients have good knowledge, they engage with their treatment better.

“Not everyone can afford devices to get online. Health literacy, so how people understand their condition, is very important in keeping them well.”
