Here are just a few of the many drinking establishment and “social centres” that existed on South Tyneside over the years.

The picture opposite shows the inside of the Alum House pub in 1990. The picture was taken in the February of that year, so what was the reason for the balloons behind the bar?

The lounge of the Alberta Social Club, in which an exhibition of their work is being shown by members of Jarrow Art Club in March 1969.
