Rafa Benitez angered by Newcastle's deadline day failures

The club failed to sign a single player yesterday, while Tim Krul and Achraf Lazaar left on season-long loans.

Benitez had hoped to see a number of last-minute arrivals to boost his squad.

However, by early evening it became clear that there would be no arrivals.

A proposed loan deal for Southampton defender Matt Targett broke down, while winger Kenedy, another loan target, stayed at Chelsea.

Benitez met United managing director Lee Charnley at the club's training yesterday afternoon.

And Newcastle's manager, without a specialist left-back for next Sunday's game against Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium, voiced his frustration in their brief meeting.

Benitez was promised "every last penny" that the club generated through promotion and player sales by owner Mike Ashley in May.

However, the club spent around £40million on six players.

United recouped a significant chunk of that outlay by selling a number of players, including Florian Thauvin, Daryl Murphy and Grant Hanley.

A number of others were loaned out.
