Rafa Benitez has hailed Newcastle United's fans after their roared his team to the top of the Championship.

Benitez's side beat Barnsley 2-0 last night to go top of the Championship.

Newcastle were backed by 5,501 fans at Oakwell, and Saturday's home game against Ipswich Town will be watched by a 50,000-plus crowd.

And Benitez said: "The fans have been amazing from the beginning.

"Since I came here, I have felt the passion and the support," Benitez told BBC Radio Newcastle.

"When we play away, it is clear they can make a difference.

"Now we have to be sure we have this support – 52,000 – every home game, and it will be even better for everyone."

Newcastle are a point above Norwich City, who were held to a 2-2 draw by Fulham.
