Rafa Benitez reacts to speculation linking Newcastle with Steven Gerrard

Gerrard – who played under Benitez at Liverpool – is leaving MLS club LA Galaxy at the end of the year and returning to England.

And the 36-year-old has been linked with a number of clubs, including Championship leaders Newcastle.

Gerrard has also reportedly had contact with MK Dons over the vacant managerial role at the League One club, while the former England international has also been strongly linked with a reunion with Brendan Rodgers at Celtic.

Asked about speculation over Gerrard, United manager Benitez said: "I saw he was linked with us.

"He's a fantastic player. He has the understanding of the game to do well as a manager.

"He's one of the best players I have ever had. He can do well if he follows this (managerial) path."
