Ready, aim, fire! Bigger and better Quasar coming to South Shields

The current Quasar site, next to The Dunes entertainment centre in South Shields, is set to close on Sunday, February 28 to make way for a biggervenue.

Construction work is already under way to create the new Quasar in the family entertainment centre at the back of Ocean Beach Pleasure Park, in Sea Road, South Shields.

Bosses say the new Quasar will bring a host of new features, as well as new jobs, and that the old site will be replaced with a brand new ride.

The new Quasar is expected to open in time for the Easter weekend.

Manager Emma Choudhury said: “The Quasar we have at the minute only lets players be on two teams and play red versus blue, and it’s only on one level, but the new one is going to allow up to six teams, it’ll have pits, ramps and targets to shoot, and people will be able to play loads of different games, like capture the flag, zombies and tag.

“It’s going to be really interactive and we’re putting it down to 20-minute sessions so it’s a bit easier for people. We’re still going to be doing kids’ parties and we’ve got the laser maze, pool table and air hockey so there’s lots for people to do.”

Emma said after almost six years on the site, it was time for a change. The opening of the new site will also see at least two new jobs created in the town.

She said: “There’s a lot of new equipment out there so we wanted to open a new site with all the latest technology to give everyone the best experience possible.

“The laser guns we’re getting are really special, we’ll be the only place in the North East with them and one of four in the UK – they make it more like playing video games.

“People will also get a score card when they join up so they’ll get their stats every time they come and can track their progress and level up as they go.

“Some people think Quasar is just for kids, but it’s not, it’s fun for all ages. We get groups of friends coming in together, and families too – it’s for everyone.”

The site where Quasar currently stands will be replaced by new ride, The Superbowl. It is one of up to six new rides set to arrive at Ocean Beach Pleasure Park in the coming season.

The fair opened on Saturday and runs until Sunday, February 21, then will go back down to weekend openings until Easter.
