Remembering the dedication of this South Tyneside football stalwart

The recent articles about a re-discovered cartoon, featuring members of Marsden Juniors football team has prompted reader Jeff Appleyard to get in touch.

The Gazette report telling of Marsdens tribute to Jim Calvert in 1976. Below, the papers tribute upon his death in 1992.

He’s been telling us about his uncle, Jim Calvert, who was a stalwart of the club.

And as well as sending me Gazette reports about Mr Calvert’s devotion to the club, Jeff has also emailed a selection of wonderful old photos, showing Marsden teams from over the years.

One report tells how Mr Calvert served Marsden CW Juniors for more than 30 years, and as such was honoured with a testimonial match and a “magnificent” trophy in 1976.
