Rescue teams called to Marsden Grotto and Wearmouth Bridge

Sunderland Coastguard Rescue Team was called out at 4.17 am on Friday, June 11, to reports of a person cut off by the tide at Marsden Grotto.

The casualty was located using rope rescue equipment and two water rescue operators.

Tynemouth RNLI lifeboat also attended and recovered the casualty to the beach at Marsden.

He was checked but required no further assistance, the coastguard said.

On its way to Marsden, the team also attended Wearmouth Bridge in Sunderland following concerns for a person there.

The casualty was handed into police care.

Detailing the incidents in a statement on Facebook, the coastguard said: “Sunderland Coastguard Rescue Team and South Shields Volunteer Life Brigade (SSVLB) were called out early this morning to a person cut off by the tide at Marden Grotto.

“As we were on our way to the station we had concerns for a person on the Wearmouth Bridge, we were retasked to attend there and handed a casualty over into police care.

“We then were free to attend Marsden where the teams worked together to using rope rescue equipment to locate the casualty as well as 2 water rescue operators waded the base of the cliffs to locate him.

"Once located the inshore lifeboat from Tynemouth RNLI lifeboat was requested to recover the casualty to the beach at Marsden where he was checked over but required no further assistance.”
