"Keep clear" - River Tyne reopens subject to movement restrictions after South Shields crane collapse

The River Tyne is now subject to movement restrictions after a crane collapse in South Shields.

The River Tyne has once again opened up to shipping after a temporary closure due to an incident which saw a boat hit a crane, causing the structure to collapse.

Restrictions were imposed on vessels hoping to sail along the river earlier this week after the event which saw a man taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.

Although boats can now travel to and from the North Sea once again, some restrictions remain in place.

A notice from the Port of Tyne advises any vessels must remain on the northern side of the river when passing Riverside Quay in the Tyne Dock area.

These boats must remain at least 150 metres from the quay and go through the area at low speed.

The notice adds: “all mariners are required to keep well clear of ongoing crane repair works.”
