Roofing spot on for County Cup progress after Willington threaten a shock
Jarrow Roofing needed penalties to get past Willington to progress to the second round of the Durham Challenge Cup last night.
The shoot-out followed a 2-2 draw inside 90 minutes, with Michael Mackay and Shaun Johnstone netting for the Roofing and Reece Brown and Jason White for the visitors.
The hosts saw the better of the opening exchanges as Paul Chow’s header was saved in the fourth minute, after he got on the end of Calvin Smith’s free-kick.
Chow had another opportunity only a few minutes later. New signing Kieran Graham’s delivery found the striker at the far post, but his header went over the bar.
The Roofing finally broke the deadlock 15 minutes in as Smith’s delivery into the box was headed home by Mackay.
The lead didn’t last long though as Second Division Willington found an equaliser just six minutes later. Andy Jennison got a hand to Brown’s 20-yard effort, but that didn’t stop the ball going over the goalkeeper’s head and bouncing into the net.
Willington took the lead on 31 minutes. Roofing’s corner was cleared off the line, the visitors swiftly countered and White managed to score a spectacular 30-yarder.
Roofing came out and threw the kitchen sink at Willington in the second half.
Chow, Mackay and Vipond all had chances to level the score, but it was substitute Johnstone who finally managed to pull it back in the 80th minute.
Mackay had his effort saved at close range by Stephen Robinson, but the rebound fell to Johnstone, who put it in the back of the net.
Johnstone re-joined the club yesterday and his co-managers were delighted with his immediate impact.
Roofing continued to create chances as they hunted for a winner. The best of those came from Robbie Williamson’s corner which was narrowly nodded wide by Shaun Vipond in stoppage time. The hosts would not seal the win in regular time, though, but they had the edge in the shout-out.
Chow, Mackay, Smith, Williamson and Vipond scored all five of Roofing’s penalties, while Jennison denied Brown to ensure a 5-4 win.
