Dummett has impressed for Newcastle United since returning from a hamstring injury late last year.

And new Wales manager Gigg was keen to call up Dummett – who made himself unavailable for a World Cup qualifier against Serbia last year during an injury-hit season – for the China Cup later this month.

However, Dummett, 26, wanted to "concentrate on Newcastle's relegation fight", according to Giggs.

“I had a conversation with Paul Dummett, because he hasn’t been in the last few squads," said Giggs.

"He just felt that it wasn’t the right time to come back. He wanted concentrate on his Newcastle career, which I have to respect, and we move on.

“He (Dummett) said that he wanted to concentrate on Newcastle’s relegation fight, so I have to respect that at the moment."

Newcastle-born Dummett – who is still eligible to play for England, having not played a competitive game for Wales – could return to the Wales fold "in the future".

Giggs said: “In the future, we will wait and see.”
