Schoolgirl cuts off hair in grandad's memory

Eleven-year-old Megan Jackson decided to cut off her long locks and donate them to charity the Little Princess Trust – which uses the hair to make wigs for children undergoing cancer treatment.

Megan, from Peterborough Way, in Jarrow, had several inches chopped off her hair by hairdresser Helen Ditchburn to donate to the charity.

She also held a sponsored silence at a sleepover at her home the same day to raise funds for Marie Curie.

Helen Graham, 33, a self-employed business owner and marketing consultant for Vitality Group, said her daughter took on the challenges in memory of her grandad John Thomas Liddle.

Mr Liddle died aged 78 from lung cancer.

Mrs Graham said she often takes part in charity events for cancer support charity Marie Curie with her friend Wendy Bowman, 41, as the disease runs in the family.

The mum of three said: “I am very proud of Megan.

“I am quite actively involved with doing things for Marie Curie, so Megan asked me if she could do the hair cut for the Little Princess charity, while also raising funds for Marie Curie.

“The eight girls who took part in the sponsored silence at the sleepover each donated £5 to the charity.”

She added: “The silence was for around an hour and the girls were sponsored by friends and family.

“We thought about raising £100 but everybody has been so kind that we have managed to surpass that.”

So far Megan has raised £200 for Marie Curie.
