Sex pest doctor appeals against medical practice ban

Dr Niaz Ahmed, from The Broadlands in Cleadon, says he has lodged papers with the High Court in Leeds, as he calls for the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service to reverse its decision to erase him from the register.

The medic, who had worked at South Tyneside District Hospital, in Harton Lane, South Shields, says this means he is suspended pending its outcome, but the General Medical Council’s list of registered medical practitioners states he is not registered and has been erased after a fitness to practice panel.

Its decision follows his conviction for two counts of indecent assault against nurses in February last year at Newcastle Crown Court, which led to an 18-month jail term which was later reduced to nine months on appeal.

He was also told he must sign the sex offenders’ register for 10 years.

The tribunal service was also told of an incident at a firework show, when he behaved inappropriately towards teenage girls.

The anaesthetist says he was compliant of the GMC’s conditions and investigation and attended sessions on professional boundaries and he could practice with conditions and supervision.

He said: “I had apologised and taken sufficient steps to work professionally and closely with them for years after the incident, without any issues and quite amicably.

“This clearly indicates that I had insight and was apologetic and had taken appropriate corrective measures to remedy any issue.”
