'Shocked' Jonjo Shelvey reacts to his superb Newcastle debut

The midfielder had a hand in both the club's goals in this afternoon's 2-1 win over West Ham United at St James's Park.

Shelvey, signed from Swansea City for £12million, started the moves for the first-half goals scored by Ayoze Perez and Georginio Wijnaldum.

Nikica Jelavic pulled a goal back after the break, but the club held on to claim all three points and climb out of the Premier League's relegation zone.

"I'm very shocked that this team is in and around it (the relegation zone) considering the players that are in that dressing room," Shelvey told BBC Sport.

"It's a pleasure to play with them. They know where your passes are going to be and things like that. So it's not been hard.

"Normally, it's hard coming into a new team and slotting in straight away, but I feel straight at home and I think that's a credit to the players and the staff that they've got here."

Shelvey also played down an off-the-ball clash with Enner Valencia that went unpunished by referee Neil Swarbrick.

Newcastle head coach Steve McClaren labeled the clash as "handbags".
