De Jong has had two injury-hit years at St James's Park following a move from Ajax, and the 27-year-old is keen to play week in, week out alongside his sibling, who once had a loan spell at United.

"Their ambitions appeal to me and they play Champions League football," said de Jong, who missed Newcastle's pre-season campaign with a hamstring problem.

"And of course I would be reunited with my brother – a dream that we have shared for a long time may come true.

"I fully understand how emotional such a move may be."

Meanwhile, de Jong's team-mate Moussa Sissoko is still in limbo.

Newcastle are yet to receive a firm bid for the 27-year-old, who wants to leave the club before the transfer window closes.

However, United manager Rafa Benitez insists he still wants him to stay.

"He's still here training and working with the team," said Benitez. "If he stays, I will be really pleased, but if he goes it will be because it’s a positive for him and the club.

Sissoko will not be involved against Bristol City at Ashton Gate tomorrow because of an ankle problem.
