South Shields burglars nabbed on CCTV taken stolen haul back to address

A pair of South Shields burglars were caught on CCTV taking their stolen haul back to their shared property.

Two burglars were caught on CCTV as they targeted outhouses in a seaside town then took stolen property back to their shared accommodation.

Paul Carr and Glen McCarthy, who lived in the same supported housing facility in South Shields, South Tyneside, broke into sheds and outhouses last July and took what they could find.

Footage showed the two carrying their stolen goods

Footage captured Carr, 44, returning to their shared home at Belgrave Terrace with golf clubs and a drill after a burglary and being helped by McCarthy, 39, to carry them upstairs.

Another CCTV clip shows the pair on their bikes as they prepare for another raid.

At Newcastle Crown Court today both men, who have served time in custody on remand, were given suspended prison sentences.

The court heard Carr first targeted an outbuilding at Sea Way and took golf clubs worth £200 and a drill worth £100.

CCTV caputured his return to the shared accommodation where both he and McCarthy lived and they both were shown on the footage carrying the stolen property up the stairs.

The court heard the golf clubs were of sentimental value as they belonged to the homeowners' son. In the early hours of the following day a garage door at a property on Marina Drive was "totally removed" and a £180 power washer was taken from inside, leaving the owner feeling "gutted" and "unsafe".

Recorder Richard Stubbs said: "CCTV shows you leave on your bikes then returning at about 12.30am with the stolen washer."

Later that same day a second home on Marina Drive was targeted and when police responded to a report of a potential break-in officers found Carr in the garden and McCarthy in a nearby rear alley.

The homeowner was "shocked" at what happened.

Carr admitted two charges of burglary and one of attempted burglary and was sentenced to six-and-a-half months, suspended for 18 months, with mental health treatment and rehabilitation requirements.

McCarthy admitted handling stolen goods in relation to the golf club raid, one burglary and one attempted burglary on the basis he acted as "lookout" and was sentenced to four months and one week suspended for 18 months with programme, mental health treatment and drug rehabilitation requirements.

The court heard they have both made positive steps to change since the offences last year.

‘Both are prolific thieves’

Speaking after the sentencing hearing, Detective Constable Frankie Kenny, of Northumbria Police, said: "Carr and McCarthy are prolific thieves, whose actions have caused a lot of distress within the community.

"Burglary is an invasive crime which has a massive impact on victims, and it is something we will do our utmost to tackle – that’s why we’ve got dedicated teams across the Force.

"We'd like to reassure the public that we will not hesitate to take action and put offenders such as these two before the courts."
