South Shields centre staff say - '˜We're open for business'

The Charles Young Centre in Talbot Road, South Shields, is more than 100 years old but has been brought up to date with a recent revamp.
Now, members are looking to show the place off in a bid to attract more people through the doors and help keep the place open for business.

Manager Sharon Clark said: “Anything we make from room hire is put straight back into the running of the venue.
“We currently have around 60-70 members but we would love to see more people coming through the door.
“Everyone seems to think the place is just for the elderly, but it’s for anyone and everyone.”

Hide AdElsa Larson, secretary, said: “The place is steeped in history. It has been revamped with the help of the Asda Foundation and Dora Dixon Trust and the Lottery.
“As well as the function rooms we also have a reading lounge and T.V room.
“We just want people to know we are here and that we are open for hire and for business.”
The centre puts on a range of activities from tea dances, to sequence dancing, indoor bowls and bingo.

People can also call in for a three-course meal on a Monday and Friday - with transport available.
Sharon added: “I think what keeps people coming back is, it has a nice relaxing atmosphere. People can come in and have a chat, and for some it could be the only time they get out and meet other people.
“I think if this place wasn’t here it would leave such a void in the community.”
