South Shields drivers warned of new 20mph speed limit

Local councillors Neil Maxwell, Rob Dix and Pat Hay were contacted by residents to help review the former 30mph speed limit.

In response to residents’ concerns, South Tyneside Council carried out a traffic survey, and now a new lower speed limit has been put in place.

Coun Moira Smith, lead member for area management and community safety, said: “The safety of our residents is of paramount importance.

“The introduction of this new speed limit is part of the council’s ongoing commitment to create safer environment for both pedestrians and motorists in the borough.

“I am pleased we have been able to put measures in place to help ensure their safety.”

The new limit on Bulmer Road - which runs past Marsden Miners Cottages and the Bulmer House supported housing scheme - will help ensure the safety of more than 130 elderly residents living in the area.

Coun Maxwell said: “With a number residents often walking along and living on Bulmer Road, we shared their concerns over the previous 30mph speed limit and the risk it posed to both drivers and pedestrians.

“We are extremely pleased that residents’ safety has been improved with the introduction of the new 20mph speed limit.

“It is important that we raise awareness amongst driver to comply with the new speed limit.”
