South Shields Greggs shop is on the move

Greggs the bakers is on the move in King Street – but only two doors along.

Work started earlier this week on an empty premises at number 15 King Street which used to be the chain’s cafe which closed its doors in June 2014.

The shop and cafe is now making a return - but this will see the closure of the existing Greggs shop at number 9 King Street. The shops are separated by the Admiral games arcade.

The move will mean there will still be two Greggs stores in the town and bosses say this investment “underlines a long-term commitment to the area.”

The firm say there will be no job losses during the reshuffle as the same team of workers will be transferred over to the new revamped premises which are due to be open on Saturday, February 6.

Joanne Wilson, shop manager at the shop, said: “I’m very proud to be managing this new-look shop in its new improved location.

“The shop team are looking forward to hearing what the local community think of the new shop.”

Bosses say the new shop layout will be designed to meet the demands of busy shoppers and offer customers a contemporary food-on-the-go experience.

Seating will also be available for customers looking to relax and enjoy their purchases inside the bakery.

The opening times will be 7am to 6pm from Monday to Saturday and 9am to 4pm on Sunday.

“This underlines our long-term commitment to the area and I’m sure it will be enjoyed by existing and new customers alike.”

The third Greggs store in King Street, near the Market Place, in not affected by the move.

The store on Fowler Street – which was closed in October last year – remains empty.
