South Shields’ Harton Academy celebrates its ‘best ever’ GCSE results
A South Shields school is celebrating record-breaking GCSE results.
Staff and students at Harton Academy are celebrating the school’s “best ever” performance on GCSE results day 2026.
Like many across South Tyneside on Thursday morning (August), Year 11 pupils headed into the school, on Lisle Road, in South Shields, to collect their results.
Following pupils receiving their grades, Harton Academy has reported that almost 69% of its Class of 2026 achieve grade 4 or above in both core subjects of English and maths.
Teaching staff have stated that the results reflect the “hard work, resilience and ambition” of Harton Academy’s students.
Many of the pupils who have received their GCSE results are set to go on to join the school’s sixth form in September as they continue their educational journeys.
Jon Skurr, headteacher at Harton Academy, has expressed his delight at the school achieving its ‘best ever’ GCSE results and stated that the students should be ‘proud’ of everything that they’ve achieved.
He said: “These best-ever results are fantastic; our students should be so proud of their achievements, with nearly 69% securing grade 4 or above in both English and mathematics.
“It is tremendous and reflects the hard work and determination of all our students and the staff who have been with them every step of the way.
“Based on today's results, I know those joining our outstanding sixth form in September will have great opportunities as they move confidently into the next stage of their education.”
