Edward Russell has a list of happy memories almost as long as the giant picture featuring the class of 1947 at South Shields High School that still takes pride of place in his home.

Now, almost 70 years after he first sat down for lesson time at the Lisle Road school, the 79-year-old is hoping to raise a toast to good times with some of his former classroom chums.

Mr Russell was searching through old files when a glance at the impressive class snap – featuring youngsters from Years 1 and 2 – inspired him to try to get back in touch with some friendly faces he hasn’t seen in decades.

Mr Russell, who lives in Cauldwell Place, South Shields, started at the school as a ten-year-old boy and enjoyed six happy years of study.

He went on to swiftly pass his 11-plus exams and has only fond memories of his time at the school.

Mr Russell, who is chairman of South Shields Conservative Association, said: “I was looking at my old school photograph and thought to myself ‘where are they now’.

“I still see some of the lads from school who still live in South Shields, but it would be nice to find out what has happened to the rest of them.

“I started at the school in 1947 as a 10-year-old and passed my 11-plus exams at the school.

“I stayed until 1953 and have lots of happy memories from my time at the school.”

While Mr Russell is not intending to organise a reunion party, he wouldn’t mind popping out for a swift half to bring his life full circle.

He added: “We are probably all getting a bit old to organise a proper reunion, but it would be great out and have a half of beer and talk over old times.”

Mr Russell is eager to hear from anyone who attended school with him back in 1947.
