South Shields pupils learn about European Christmas cultures

Children from Hadrian Primary School will be finding answers questions such as do children in Finland hang up stockings for Christmas and do children in Romania believe in Rudolf?

They will be exchanging Christmas tree decorations and information booklets with children in schools all across Europe.

Each class will be making different types of tree decorations and will be creating booklets with information about their area, how they celebrate Christmas and sharing recipes and traditional songs.

These decorations and booklets will then be posted to 30 schools across Europe.

The list of countries includes, France, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Belgium, Estonia, Romania, Finland, Greece, Czech Republic and many more.

Hadrian Primary arts co-ordinator, Miss Barr, said: “The decorations we receive will be displayed on our school Christmas tree and booklets in the entrance.

“If you live locally you can also take advantage of this exciting project as decorations that have not been sent to other schools will be available to buy at the school Christmas fair.

“This is such a fantastic opportunity for the children find out more about those that live in other countries.”

The South Shields school’s headteacher Scott Brown said: “This a great cross-curricular opportunity to learn about the history of other cultures, as well as their own.

“Projects such as these give create chances for the children write for a purpose and make it more meaningful for them.”
