South Shields sea-farers turn to technology to share life-saving history with next generation

A team of South Tyneside life-savers are turning to technology to teach the next generation a vital lesson on their rich sea-faring history.

South Shields Volunteer Life Brigade are going back to the classroom to tell the ‘Always Ready’ story of their life-saving heritage to school children as part of the group’s milestone 150th anniversary celebrations.

Brigade members are getting onboard with a major new digital education resource to give youngsters a thought-provoking insight into their actions at sea - both past and present.

The online resource, produced by North East firm Shoofly Publishing, is packed with a raft of videos, activity sheets, support material for teachers and a slide show presentation.

It is particularly aimed at primary school age children - but is being made available to all school across the borough.

Schools can also request an education team visit to give an assembly presentation and visits to the Watch House can also be arranged.

Brigade Honorary Secretary, Tom Fennelly, says: “The digital education resource is a great way to bring the Always Ready story to schoolchildren in a fun and interactive way which is directly linked to their learning.

“As well as being a great classroom resource the experience can be enhanced with an assembly presentation or even better with a guided visit to the Watch House”.

To book an assembly presentation or arrange a school visit, contact Kerry Cook, Project Officer for ‘Always Ready’ SSVLB, on 211 5599, extension 24034.
