The borough council's planning department has approved an application for East Boldon Infant School off Front Street in the borough’s Cleadon and East Boldon ward.

Application would ‘preserve the character and appearance of the conservation area’

A heritage statement submitted in February 2026 noted the existing school buildings were “locally listed” and sit within the East Boldon Conservation Area.

The proposed development included a single-storey external classroom constructed in timber cladding, which would be “used to enhance outdoor learning provision and improve the educational environment for pupils”.

It was argued that the development would be “visually subordinate to existing school buildings” and positioned to “minimise visibility from public view points”, as well as having the design feature of “reversible construction”.

Applicants added the development would “preserve the character and appearance of the conservation area” and “reflects good design practice through small scale, sympathetic materials and minimal street visibility."

During a council consultation exercise on the plans there were nine representations submitted in support.

Supporters said the classroom would be a "positive addition" to the school and noted that extra space would "provide another safe place for children to grow and learn and to take part in more activities" and would "make such a difference to pupils, staff and parents."

Council make application decision

South Tyneside Council's planning department approved the application on April 15, 2026.

Council planners, in a decision report, said the development would "result in no significant harm to the visual amenity of the area, the residential amenity of any neighbouring properties or the highway safety of the area."

The council's historic environment officer added the new classroom would be "largely screened by existing buildings, fencing, and established vegetation."

East Boldon Infant School’s entry on the council’s local list describes it as “a fine mixed board school of 1885 [and] now the village infant school”.

The listing adds the “large ornate timber cupola and spire has sadly gone”, that “rear extensions have not spoilt its original design” and that “some of the playground walls have round coping bricks.”
