South Tyneside weather: Hurricane Kirk to sent 50mph gusts to South Shields and beyond

Wind gusts of up to 50 miles per hour are expected to batter the North East this week.

The remnants of Hurricane Kirk, which impacted parts of Central and North America earlier in October, is now heading for the UK with South Tyneside and the wider North East in its path.

The Met Office is predicting heavy wind and rain for northern areas of the UK after a last minute weather warning was put in place on Monday evening further south, in an area which spanned from Devon and Cornwall across to Kent.

After a wet Tuesday, which will see heavy rainfall from around midday continue through the afternoon and into the night, working its way into Wednesday morning.

Wind speeds are expected to rise above normal levels at around 5am on Wednesday morning, when wind gusts rise to 31 miles per hour.

These will continue to rise over the morning and into the afternoon, when peak gusts will hit at around 3pm.

These conditions will continue into the evening and night, with gusts only falling to below 30mph again around midday on Thursday. The wet conditions will continue until late on Wednesday afternoon, although the worst of the rain will conclude at around 3pm on Wednesday.

At the time of writing, the Met Office does not have any warnings in place across the region. This may change as the weather system edges closer.
