Special Grease screenings to celebrate musical's 40th anniversary in South Shields

Visitors are being encouraged to dig out their 1950s outfits and slick back their hair to mark the film’s milestone at The Customs House, South Shields.

The musical - starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John as High School sweethearts Danny Zuko and Sandy Olsson - was released in 1978 to both critical and commercial acclaim.

It spawned a sequel and sing-a-long version and remains one of the best-loved musicals of all time, with a chart-topping, hit-filled soundtrack.

Now you can relive the dramas of The T-Birds and The Pink Ladies as they navigate teenage life in the 1950s at Rydell High.

Leah Strug, programming and marketing manager at The Customs House, said: “Grease is a film that is part of so many people’s childhood so when we realised it was 40 this year we just had to celebrate it.

“We have put two showings on, one to introduce a new generation to the cliques of Rydell High and one on later in the evening where friends can get together and enjoy a trip down memory lane. Dressing up is encouraged!”

Grease will be screened at 6pm and 8.30pm at The Customs House, Mill Dam, South Shields, on Friday, April 20.

Meanwhile, the Customs House, down by the Mill Dam, is extending its run of The Greatest Showman with two further sing-along screenings taking place on Thursday April 12 at 6.30pm and Sunday April 22 at 5pm.
