A proposed £4million move to Shanghai Shenhua broke down last month.

But the midfielder could yet leave the club as the Chinese transfer window remains open.

Tiote made his first appearance in almost a month in Saturday’s 1-0 win over West Bromwich Albion.

And the 29-year-old – who had a long-range effort disallowed for offside – was outstanding alongside new signing Jonjo Shelvey.

Asked if he hoped Tiote would stay, head coach McClaren said: “I hope so.

“We’ll certainly be discussing that. Cheick has come back with a smile on his face.

“He’s 100% committed, and if he keeps his composure and passes simply, he’s a very good player.”
