Teen creates social group for youngsters with visible differences

A new support group which has been launched in South Tyneside aims to make a huge impact on the lives of young people.

Visible Difference Matters is the name of the group - created by 19-year-old Demi Moody - with the aim of providing a social hub for young people with conditions that have made visible differences to their appearance.

Demi, from Brockley Whins, in South Shields, suffers from Treacher Collins syndrome, and hearing problems.

She started the group as a way of reaching out to others who may face a daily struggle caused by the way they look.
She hopes the independent group will provide a social network for those under the age of 25 by organising events and trips out for members.

Lindsey Jones, a teacher for the deaf at South Tyneside hearing impaired service, speaking on behalf of Demi, said they hope the group will be a hit in the borough.

She said: “There are a number of people in the borough with a condition that gives them visible differences.

“This group has been set up as a social group to bring them together.

“We are hoping that it will eventually get charity status.”
