Teenager ran out of drink '“ so stole a bottle of wine

A thirsty thief snatched a bottle of wine from a South Tyneside store '“ so he could keep on drinking.

 Cash-strapped Jonathan Millett was caught on camera stashing the booze in his hoodie before making a swift exit from SA Convenience store, in Ashley Road, South Shields.

 The 19-year-old was identified as the culprit when police viewed the footage and admitted theft at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court.

 Glenda Beck, prosecuting, said: “Millett was seen taking the wine on CCTV at 4.15pm on July 19.

 Ian Haq, defending, said: “He was slightly intoxicated and wanted to keep drinking but had no money and made the decision to steal the wine.”

 Millett, of Girton Road, South Shields, was given a six-month conditional discharge and must pay court costs of £85, a £15 victim surcharge and £6.99 compensation to the store.
