It was out with the old and in with the new when The Sundial on Sea Road, South Shields, was taken over by businessman Tony Singh and closed at the start of the year to allow builders to work on the building.

As well as a new-look first-floor function room - with full length windows so guests can enjoy the sea views - the downstairs has also been redesigned.

The venue was officially opened last week, ready for the bank holiday weekend, by Ann Halligan who worked for Mr Singh for 26 years in the shop he owned in Whiteleas.

Bar manager Chris Lincoln said: “The New Sundial has undergone a dramatic transformation, as the previous decor was looking tired and was in desperate need of a revamp.

“We have new menus and introduced live music on a weekend and bank holiday and have a cocktail station.

“We have also looked at the outside area and created a stage for the summer season, and we will also have a refreshment area and bar out there too.

“During the day it will cater for families, while on an evening it will cater for the more mature audience, with a new evening menu coming soon.

“Since we opened we have had some really positive feedback.

“We do have high standards and will be striving to maintain those for our customers, now and for the future.”

The venue will be launching its new menu this weekend, and Chris said food will be locally sourced and freshly cooked.

He added: “Despite being open to the public there are still changes and adaptations being made, including a balcony to the front and some additional metalwork.

“We have also had inquiries regarding an area for dog walkers, and that is something we are looking into for the future.”

The bar currently employs 18 staff, including four chefs, on a range of part-time and full-time contracts.
