The Word in line for design award

South Shields library The Word is among nine North East buildings in the running for a regional design award.

The Word – National Centre for the Written Word – designed by FaulknerBrowns Architects, has been shortlisted for the RIBA North East 2017 Awards.

The venue was officially opened by Sir Ridley Scott, last year.

It offers a celebration of the written word through a rolling programme of exhibitions, events and workshops.

On its opening day, people queued around the Market Place to get a first glimpse inside.

 The winners will be announced during a ceremony at The Biscuit Factory in Newcastle on May 19.
