The shelter, which was established in 1896, helps animals that are unwanted, neglected, abused and abandoned - as well as reuniting lost animals with their owners and finding loving new homes for those who are no longer wanted.
Here are 13 cute animals who are in need of a home - you can find out more at: https://www.dogandcatshelter.com/.

5. Prince (Belgian Malinois)
Prince has been nothing but a joy to be around in his time with at the shelter, he is confident, outgoing and very intelligent! He loves being in the company of people but seems to lack any kind of awareness to the fact he is not in fact a lap dog. He does sometimes jump up or even try to climb on your knee. | Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter

6. Meeko
Meeko is a handsome, confident lad who loves to have a fuss made of him! He is such a friendly boy who loves the company of his humans! Meeko is the most affectionate lad, the closer he can get to you the better. He will wind around your legs, meowing for attention and purring away, and given the opportunity he will often jump up on your shoulders to give you some face nudges. | Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter

7. Pisces and Ninja (Jack Russell Terrier)
Pisces and Ninja are two older boys looking for a lovely home, together. The brothers arrived into our care after sadly losing their owner so have already faced a substantial amount of upset in their lives. The boys have been typical little terriers since arriving with us – they are adorable and sweet cheeky little chaps. Ninja is by far the braver of the two, and it can sometimes take Pisces a moment to warm up when making new friends. | Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter

8. Nala
Nala is a lovely, gentle girl who can be little shy initially. She took a little while to settle in at the shelter, but now that she is feeling more confident with our staff and volunteers, she has shown herself to be a playful and friendly little lady. She enjoys being made a fuss of and will purr away. She also loves to be brushed and particularly likes playing with catnip toys. | Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter
