As Halloween approaches, the popularity for all things “spooky” soars, so Langley Castle has put together a list of some of the “most haunted” places in the North East of England.
The ghostly tales include the site of the bloodiest battle in the history of England to King Charles I visiting a Newcastle city centre pub.
Feel free to visit these places in the lead up to Halloween, if you dare...

5. The Ship Isis, Sunderland
This popular Sunderland pub is said to be haunted by the ghost of Mary Ann Cotton, the first female serial killer in England, and some of her 21 poisoned victims. It is alleged that she buried two of her victims, who were also her children, where the pub’s basement now is. Visitors have reported hearing cries and screams in the bar, along with sudden apparitions of a woman wearing Victorian-era clothing. | Google Maps

6. Langley Castle, Northumberland
Langley Castle was once believed to be haunted by Maud de Lucy, who jumped out of the castle’s highest window when she learned of her husband’s death. 7. The Castle Keep, Newcastle
The 12th century Castle Keep is Newcastle’s oldest building and therefore lends itself well to ghostly tales. One of them is of the “Poppy Girl”, who was imprisoned in the castle and died there. She has reportedly been sighted wandering around the building on a number of occasions, with her ghostly figure accompanied by the smell of fresh flowers. | Google Maps

8. Flodden Field, Northumberland
Flodden Field is the scene of the bloodiest battle in the history of England, with 14,000 people reported to have lost their lives within the space of three hours, just over 500 years ago.
